Leave No Trace: 7 Principles for Responsible Hiking
Sustainable journeys in nature
Leave no trace
Whether hiking, camping, climbing, sailing, or cycling – anyone who spends time outdoors also has a responsibility towards nature. More and more people are drawn to the outdoors, but not everyone knows how to behave in an environmentally friendly way. The result: litter on the roadside, disturbed wildlife, and places that lose their charm.
That's exactly why the "Leave No Trace" principles exist. They help us to be mindful when we're out and about, to protect nature, and still enjoy the full outdoor experience – without leaving a trace.
In this guide, we'll show you what's behind the seven principles, why they're so important, and how you can easily integrate them into your everyday outdoor life – for a clean natural environment and a good feeling when you're out and about.
What does eco-conscious hiking mean?
Environmentally conscious hiking means moving through nature in a way that leaves it as undisturbed as possible. It's about being considerate of animals, plants, trails, and other people – and also questioning your own comfort zone. Those who hike sustainably think ahead: from route planning and equipment to waste disposal.
Why is this important? Because our outdoor adventures will only remain enjoyable as long as we protect nature. Trampled plants, disturbed wildlife, or litter on the trail not only destroy the natural experience – they also have long-term consequences for ecosystems.
In addition, many outdoor areas are particularly worthy of protection: moors, alpine zones, or dense forests provide habitats for endangered species. Every careless step, every piece of litter left behind can cause great damage here.
Why is nature conservation important to us?
Nature conservation is also very important to us – the founders of Läppie. On a trip through the USA, we experienced how naturally nature is respected there. "Leave No Trace" is not just a slogan there, but an ethic. Back in Europe, we quickly noticed how often trash – especially toilet paper – is simply left behind here.
We wanted to change that. Not with a wagging finger, but with a practical solution and simple advice.
With Läppie, we not only want to offer a reusable product, but above all to raise awareness. Because those who are out and about should know how to leave nature beautiful for others too.

The 7 Principles of Conservation & Sustainable Hiking
These principles are based on the "Leave No Trace" concept and will help you be mindful and considerate when outdoors – whether on a long-distance hiking trail, at a festival, or on a micro-adventure on your doorstep. Since nature in the USA is wilder than here, we have adapted the principles slightly.
